What is a sick visit?

A sick visit is an appointment you schedule with your pediatrician when your child isn’t feeling well. Whether the illness is chronic or acute, Edison Health’s team of skilled and compassionate pediatricians ask questions about your child’s symptoms, review their medical history, and perform comprehensive physical exams before making an informed diagnosis.

Why would my child need a sick visit?

With young children at home, it’s hard to know when you should bring your child in to see a pediatrician and when you should try to treat their symptoms at home. Often, children simply need fluids and rest to feel better.

However, if your child is showing any of the following symptoms, you should schedule a sick visit with Edison Health promptly:

  • High fever in children younger than 1
  • Fever that lasts for several days
  • White spots on tonsils or throat
  • Persistent sore throat
  • Vomiting
  • Diarrhea
  • Rash that looks like chickenpox
  • Widespread rash
  • Headache that won’t go away
  • Very stiff neck
  • Sudden confusion

Contact Edison Health immediately if your child is older than 1 year old and has a fever accompanied by a stiff neck, vomiting, rash, or head pain.

What happens during a sick visit?

Sick visits typically take between 15 and 30 minutes. During this visit, your pediatrician asks you and your child questions about their symptoms, including when they started and which home remedies have helped. They may also ask about your family and medical history to assess your child’s risk for specific conditions and diseases.

At this appointment, your pediatrician will take your child’s temperature, listen to their lungs and heartbeat, and check their throat for signs of infection. If your child show’s signs of strep throat, the team can perform a throat culture or rapid strep test. Your child’s pediatrician might order a urinalysis or blood work if they need further information.

Once you have a diagnosis, your pediatrician can recommend effective treatments such as antibiotics. They can also suggest home remedies to help ease your child’s discomfort while they recover at home.
